Our Silk

The process typically begins with the cultivation of mulberry trees. Mulberry leaves are the primary food source for silkworms, the larvae of the silk moth (Bombyx mori). Mulberry trees are cultivated in controlled environments to ensure optimal leaf quality.

Silkworm eggs are hatched, and the larvae are fed a diet consisting solely of mulberry leaves. As they grow, the silkworms continually consume mulberry leaves and undergo several molting stages.

When the silkworms reach maturity, they spin cocoons made of silk thread produced from glands in their heads. The silkworm secretes a proteinaceous fluid through its spinneret, which hardens upon contact with air, forming a silk filament. The silkworm spins these filaments in a figure-eight pattern to create a cocoon around itself.

After degumming (cleaning), the softened silk fibers are ready for spinning. The silk fibers from several cocoons are unwound and twisted together to form a single thread. This process can be done manually or using mechanical spinning machines, depending on the scale of production.

The spun silk threads are then woven into fabric on looms. This fabric can vary in texture, thickness, and weave pattern, depending on the desired end product. For Lullaby silk comforters, this silk is encased with a luxurious cotton shell. 

The silk comforter is filled with layers of silk floss, which are the soft, fluffy fibers found inside the cocoon. These layers are evenly distributed within the fabric casing and often quilted in place to prevent shifting of the silk filling.
